BASIC INFORMATION

CONFERENCE SITE

Taxco is a charming town-located between México City and Acapulco- situated in a group of hills at 1,660 meters (5,446 ft.) above see level. On each of the hills, small, low houses lie huddled together, their roofs of red tile seeming to flow down the hillside, while a labyrinth of cobbled lanes weave among them. Taxco is famous by its baroque and mexican churrigueresque architecture. The weather in December is warm (about 20 C., 68 F.) , dry and sunny. The evenings, however, can be chilly (about 10 C., 50 F.). Light clothes and a pair of sweaters is therefore recommended. The conference will take place on the Conference Center and Center for Foreigner Students that the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México has at the Ex-Hacienda El Chorrillo in Taxco. The address of the conference venue is: Unidad de Seminarios y Centro para Enseñanza de Extranjeros. UNAM. Ex-Hacienda El Chorrillo S/N. 40220. Taxco. Guerrero. México. For the opening hours of the registration desk at the conference site see the preliminary program.

PROGRAM

The program will consist of invited plenary one hour lectures and contributed presentations either as short talks or in poster form. The deadline for abstracts is September 14. The proceedings will be published by American Mathematical Society. The volume will contain the invited plenary talks and some of the contributed presentations, that will be selected after the conference, on the basis of the advice of referees. American Mathematical Society offers a 50% discount off the list price to the conference participants. Those interested in taking advantage of this offer must send to American Mathematical Society a form-that will be available at the registration desk- before March 15, 2002.

REQUEST OF SECOND CIRCULAR

If you wish to receive the second circular, please go to Second Circular.

REGISTRATION

The registration fee is USD 90 (USD 120 after September 14). This includes the cost of the facilities at the conference site, stationary, the coffee breaks, etc. The participants are encouraged to register on line, but registration by mail is also possible. To register go to Registration.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation matters are handled by Sociedad Matemática Mexicana and Centro para Enseñanza de Extranjeros. For more information go to Accommodation.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The conference committee will make an effort to offer financial assistance to young scientists who already demonstrated their research capabilities and face difficulties in obtaining support from their institutions, and to scientists from countries with currency limitations. We deeply appreciate the help of our sponsors in this regard. The financial help will consist on a reduction on the conference fee, possibly on free lunches at the conference site and, depending on the funding available, also on a number of grants that should cover the local expenses and eventually part of the travel expenses. The participants that need financial support are requested to mention this fact in their registration form. The decision will be communicated by september 21.

TRAVEL

Taxco is located 177 Km( 110 miles) south-west of Mexico City and 212 Km (132 miles) north of Acapulco. It is connected by a good highway to both cities. The drive from Mexico City takes about 2 hours and from Acapulco 2 hours and a half. The participants should consult a mexican embassy or consulate to find out if they need a visa to enter México. If you need an offical letter of invitation you can request it by E-Mail to : mmnsec2@leibniz.iimas.unam.mx . For more information go to Travel and to About Taxco.

SOCIAL EVENTS

There will be a wine and cheese party on Monday evening, a conference excursion on Wednesday afternoon and a conference dinner on Thursday. For more information go to Social Events.
