Mexico City -the capital of the United Mexican States- is located in the south-central part of the country, midway between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, approximately at 2,200 meters above sea level. By the time of the Spring School, the season is typically dry, with temperatures that fluctuate daily around 9 C - 26 C. In this city of about 9 millions inhabitants, the central campus of UNAM -known as Ciudad Universitaria- is placed about 16 Km south of the historic district (Centro Histórico), in the Borough of (Delegación) Coyoacán.

The Mexican currency is called Peso M.N. (in short, peso). Presently, the exchange rates are approximately $10.90 per US dollar and $16.00 per euro.

Arrival:
Before entering to Mexico, you will be asked to fill out an Immigration Card for Tourist (Forma Migratoria FMT). Keep it in a safe place during your stay since you will be required to hand it when leaving the country. The cost of obtaining a replacement FMT card is about $476 plus the time expended doing the red tape. You have been warned!

We strongly recommend that you take only cabs owned by companies endorsed by the airport's authorities. There are three of them: Sitio 300 (Taxis del Aeropuerto), Protaxi Ejecutivo and Porto Taxi. First buy a ticket at some of the counter desks located at various places within the airport, particularly nearby international arrival's exits E1 and E3. Then board the cab by airport's exit 10. Presently, the cost of a ride to Ciudad Universitaria is $205 (zone 7) and to Centro Histórico or Colonia Roma (where some of the hotels listed below are located) is $152 (zone 4). More information is found in the airport web page (in Spanish).

From the hotels listed above, you can reach Ciudad Universitaria by taking either the subway Metro line 3 or the Metro Bus; the fares are $2.00 and $3.50 respectively. IIMAS is located on boulevard Circuito Escolar in Ciudad Universitaria. To get to IIMAS, do the following:

  • By Metro line 3, board it toward Universidad station. Then exit at Copilco station. Once outside the station, go along Avenida Cerro del Agua heading south. After reaching the university's perimeter, go ahead across boulevard Circuito Exterior straight up to Facultad de Medicina. Then turn left and go along the sidewalk up to the bus stop at Facultad de Química. IIMAS is across the boulevard.
  • If riding the Metro Bus, board it toward Dr. Gálvez station (the southernmost stop) and exit there. Continue along Avenida Insurgentes heading south, straight up to the Stadium (about 5-10 min walking). Once there, board either the Puma Bus route 7 (Blue) or route 8 (Gold) (a fare-free university shuttle service) and exit at either IIMAS (route 7) or Facultad de Química (route 8).
